ABOUT SUMMONED SURVEILLANCE:
Through an established live video / web feed in the artists’ shared studio, Summoned Surveillance invites online viewers to remotely observe and interact in real-time with the artists through a computer web browser.

The new-genre, performance piece is meant to explore a range of issues including those related to privacy and voyeurism, intellectual property, and public and self-scrutiny. The installation investigates both the synthesis and disconnect between the actual and virtual realms, the artificial (re)presentation of reality in the electronic world, and contemporary culture’s obsession with watching reproduced realism in the media. As we discussed, you will be hosting an exhibition on Friday, November 20 2009 5-8pm at Cornerstone on University. For the record, this is next week!!!

What I need from you at this time if you are still electing to participate in this event:
1). Choose one of the completed projects that you would like to exhibit at the show. (I may pick for you if I really really think you should show a particular piece).
2). Bring a high-quality electronic version of this piece with you to class on Monday 11/16/2009 (I am printing these files the following Wednesday 11/18). This can be a photoshop, illustrator, sound, or video file. It should be a piece that you did for one of the afore mentioned projects.
3).I will need piece information for labels including: title, name of artist, medium.
4). We are asking that you help to hang the show on Friday -- which means you arrive at Cornerstone at 4:15pm on Friday November 20.
5). We are also asking that you help us take the show down at 8:15ish the same evening. You will mos likely be able to take your work home with you.
6) You are invited to invite. Moreover, let's make this a party. We will most likely put together mini-invitations / flyers this week to disseminate and poison the masses. Any ideas? Anyone want to make these?
7). We will have a food and beverages table. So, please feel free to bring food, etc. The more, the better. I'm starving.

1). I'm very satisfied with the completed video projects. Well-developed narratives and strong aesthetic themes running through all of these.
2). I apologize for my sermon this morning, but I did feel it was necessary to have a discussion re: recent issues, deadlines, and late projects. This said, I know it may have resonated in a harsh manner, and I certainly didn't intend to negate or trivialize your hard work on this project, or your work to date.
3). Okay. So, work on your storyboards this week. Generate interesting drawings that can guide you in the photo process.
4). Feel free to start your project; take lots of low-resolution photos. Use IMovie HD to edit.
5). Stop Motion projects will be due at the end of class (10:30am) on Wednesday 11/18.

Lux Arizona State University’s Creative Undergraduate Review is accepting submissions!

Lux Undergraduate Creative Review is now accepting submissions for it’s annual issue in art, fiction, non-fiction, film, music, and poetry. Lux, a publication run through the Honors College, is ASU’s premiere undergraduate creative review, and we want to display your work in this year’s edition! Lux is an excellent opportunity for you to get published (which looks great on resumes), win $250 worth of cash or prizes, and show off your talent to the academic and creative community.

The deadline is fast approaching, this Thursday October 15th by midnight. As art students, and artists you often already have works completed. We would love to review these works for publication. We accept art of all mediums: sculpture, drawings, metalwork, watercolor, digital… etc.

Submission guidelines can be found on our blog site at http://luxmag.wordpress.com/. Please direct all submissions and questions to luxmag@gmail.com. Include a high quality digital image of your work, the work title, your name and phone number. There is no limit to the amount of pieces you submit. Consider Considering

A couple of things to think about:
1). Class attendance is mandatory. If you've already missed a class or two for health reasons, etc., keep in mind that participation grades are heavily weighted and your absences may affect your final marks (as the British say).
2). More importantly, or perhaps less importantly depending on your perspective, is the fact that sound projects are due on Monday morning at 7:40am. No exceptions.
3). If anyone is interested in performance art, check out the Live Art Platform event tonight starting at 7:00pm at Cornerstone (east of rural on university). Super cool event facilitated by ASU's own, Natalia Jaeger (http://www.liveartplatform.com/).

Sound Project Due 10/12/09

Attached are two options for your lovely sound project; it is due on Monday 10/12/09 at 7:40am. Absolutely no exceptions. Grrrhh.

For the record, you may use only your voice or "naturally" produced or occurring sounds. Ergo, you may not use musical instruments, MIDI, or pre-recorded loops from the web or GarageBand. You may, however, record cars and trains and spoons against glass and farts and burps and fingernails on a chalkboard and shower-singing and rain in a tin can and other things that go boom in the dark.

Save file as MP3. Put in instructor's dropbox on Monday 10/12/09. We will then have a critique.

Project: Option 1: Voice-only Audio Recreation / Reinterpretation.
Technical: To gain a basic understanding of multi-track audio composition software and to gain experience recording and editing sound.
Conceptual: To deconstruct and reinterpret another’s audio work and to explore the methodology of using sound and voice as expressive devises.

Overview: Recreate and record your own interpretation of a piece of music using only your own voice and other non-instrument noisemakers. Must be a minimum of 45 seconds in
length, and use at least 4 tracks (or layers) of sound.

Steps
Record your voice or acoustic instrument to a Real Instrument track
1. Click the track header of the Real Instrument track you want to record.
2. Click the Record button (the round one with a red circle). Your song will play, and anything you play or sing will be recorded. Notice that a new region appears as you play.
3. When you’re finished with the part you want to record, click the play button to stop recording.

Then you need to create your voice track which you do by recording it with your microphone onto a new track in your Audacity Project. As the voice recording will be on a different track from the music, it can after recording be edited entirely independently of the music (see "Editing and Effects" below).

To record with your microphone, you set the recording source to microphone in Audacity's mixer toolbar input selector http://audacity.sourceforge.net/onlinehelp-1.2/toolbar_mixer.htm (or, if you are on OS X, you set the microphone as the default recording source in Apple Audio-Midi Setup). Then press the red Record button.

If you want to be really professional, why not do a level test of your voice before you record for real? Click on the downward pointing arrow in the right hand (red) recording level meters http://audacity.sourceforge.net/onlinehelp-1.2/toolbar_meter.htm and click "monitor input". While speaking into your microphone as loud as you would for the loudest part of what you want to record, adjust the recording level slider (by the microphone symbol) on the Mixer Toolbar http://audacity.sourceforge.net/onlinehelp-1.2/toolbar_mixer.htm so the recording meters are almost reaching the far right-hand side (but not far enough to bring the red hold lights on). If the recording level meters are not visible, go to the Preferences and check "Enable Meter Toolbar" on the Interface tab.

Audacity has the handy ability to allow you to record your voice track while listening to your music track, so you can dream up what to say as the mood of the music takes you and have your voice laid down in the same place as the music. To do this, check "Play other tracks while recording new one" in the Audio I/O tab of Audacity Preferences, and press the red Record button. The Preferences are usually under the Edit Menu, but on OS X are under the Audacity menu. Note: obviously you must use tight fitting headphones to record while listening to a music track, to avoid your microphone picking up the music playback in your voice recording.

After you have finished recording, just press "play" in Audacity to hear the result – the music track and your voice track will be mixed together just as they will when you come to "export" the recording as a computer audio file.

Grades Are Done

Calculated the mean for the class grades re: Vector Project. Happy average of 92%. Wasn't it a 92% mean for the last project? Very strange. Maybe I'm secretly calculating grades so that everything always averages out to a 92%. Not so secret anymore, I guess.

Sound Design:
a) the process of creating the overall sonic character of a production.
b) the process of fabricating 'special' sound effects

Objective: To understand the production challenges of "sound design" including loops, the live capture of sound, its synthesis using computers, and the use of multi-track digital sound editing software including Audacity and Garage Band.

Rules of the Exercise:
-Using at least 3 of the provided sample loops, create an original score and/or piece of audio art. You may use only one SUPPLEMENTAL loop that you find on your own or one -Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) produced loop in the score.
-You may utilize either Garage Band or Audacity to create your composition.
-The piece must be at the minimum 45 seconds in length; maximum is 1 minute 30 seconds.
-Save the file as an Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) or as an MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 (MP3), upload to blog (if possible), and be prepared to play file for ensuing class critique.

Wednesday's Illustrator Follow-up

Thanks for everyone's hard work today. Progress is being made, and I'm very impressed by everyone's work ethic and diligence. We are battling the Illustrator beast, and soon, we will slay the ugly troglodyte that is Adobe and wage new wars with audio and video.

Things to remember:
1). You will have next class (Monday 9/21) to work on your Vector project.
2). Keep it simple. The aesthetic is important here, so focus on the arrangement of text on the page, the negative and positive spatial relationships, and the fundamental tools of Illustrator. We are just playing with the software at this point.
3). Read Chapter 1 in your textbook.
4). Follow the directions on the handout. When you're done with your Vector project, save the file as an illustrator document (.ai extension). File should be 8x10 inches. Or, ahem, 10x8. ALSO, upload a web gif or jpeg file to your blog with a contextualization of the piece.
5). Project is due at 7:40am on Wednesday 9/23/09 in my dropbox. No exceptions.

We will then explore the magic of sound and video.

After Monday 9/14/09

Comrades:
I understand that Illustrator is a bit counter-intuitive at times. I also understand that we are just touching upon the basics and really not exploring the full range of tools and capabilities of this software, but please, maintain a healthy perspective as this is only the first day of lecture, etc. Most of you are already working at levels far beyond the proverbial novice (which is fine), but allow yourself a window to gain the skills necessary to produce art at this advanced level. This stuff is not always easy, and as you know, learning is rarely immediate. This is a process, and for some designers and artists, this is a lifelong pursuit that shifts and evolves with every updated version of Illustrator, etc.

Study the tutorials as homework. Come back on Wednesday and be prepared to share with the class a new tool you learned while away from studio. I will do the same. We will unite on Wednesday in a crashing wave of newfound bliss and splendor and we will spend the initial part of class finishing our exercises. Then a critique, perhaps. Then, the promised land awaits us. Right? Right.

Also, I have finished your grades for the 1st project. Average score(mean) was 92% (this is not including those who did not hand in the assignment). Very high mean for a 1st project, in my opinion.

By now, and this is no mystery, but if you have not handed in a photomontage project, you're going to get a whopping 0/100. I'd like us to negotiate another deal where you can, at the very least, get a few points. I'm open to discussing this further at any point if you'd like to develop an alternative plan of attack. Let me know. But if you say nothing, I will let this issue rest and die and drift into the annals of extinction. Think dinosaurs. Think neanderthals. No more. Zilch. Wiped out. Never again. The big zero.

As I mentioned in class this morning, I am seriously inspired by everyone's projects. Amazing work. Unfortunately, we ran a bit long today and didn't have an opportunity to critique everyone's work. I apologize for my long-winded sermons. We will, however, finish the crit next week first thing.

A few things to remember for class on Monday:
1. If you have not uploaded your psd photomontage file to my instructor dropbox, you will do this first thing 7:40am on Monday. Sadly, the project will be late, but I'm not going to severely punish anyone; just a few points for tardiness. If, however, you fail to complete the project by Monday, you will receive a 0. Yikes!

2. I understand that there was a bit of confusion regarding this project, so I will email you an an extra credit assignment worth 10 points. THIS IS NOT MANDATORY. 3. We will finish the crit on Monday and then delve into a few lectures and tutorials on vectors and Illustrator. I'll also assign (hopefully) your second exercise.

In an essay printed in 1896 called What Is Art, Leo Tolstoy explained that "in order to correctly define art, it is necessary, first of all, to cease to consider it as a means to pleasure and to consider it as one of the conditions of human life. Viewing it in this way we cannot fail to observe that art is one of the means of intercourse between man and man."

He later suggested that "art, in our society, has been so perverted that not only has bad art come to be considered good, but even the very perception of what art really is has been lost. Bring Your Digital Camera to Monday's Class

Please bring your digital cameras (and USB cords) to class on Monday. We may change the syllabus around a bit and start Project 1 a bit early. This would of course postpone our discussion on vectors until the following week. :) But don't despair, nothing is set in stone, and we may just continue along the vector path (pun intended) as scheduled. You guys are a very surprising and unbelievably creative group. First lecture day: a mini-sermon about raster graphics, and almost immediately, all of you hit the ground running. I certainly didn't anticipate that. I was very impressed by all of your efforts and innovation, and I’m looking forward to reviewing the finished products of your self-portraits next Monday during class. Feel free to play with your images over the weekend, and by all means, blog away. Next class: some more about raster graphics, perhaps a discussion about vectors and vector applications like Illustrator. I’ll probably ask for all of your self-portrait exercises to be uploaded to your blogs by Monday’s break.

Thanks for a great first day. I'm already impressed with the caliber of talent and maturity in the class, and I'm looking forward to working with all of you this semester. I've attached an ugly text file with roster information (phone numbers, emails, and NEW blog URLs). If you have not sent me your blog URL, please drop me an email in the near future. Also, please review the text file to ensure that your information is correct; some of the blogs are not working--perhaps the site URL is documented improperly.

What else? if you want your picture to show up when you're following someone's blog, it appears that you have to re-upload a photo at that time. It will prompt you after you click FOLLOW. Either way, don't fret about this now; we'll take care of it on Wednesday.

In the meantime, blog away and play with your settings. No fear.

Art 194 - IDM

ART 194, Intro to Digital Media, is a studio course that concentrates on the fundamentals of digital media including imagery, sound, video, animation, and the web. Assignments are given to engage students in the technical, conceptual, and aesthetic aspects of digital media. Students will employ a diverse range of techniques and software as they become familiar with contemporary artistic processes involving the use of the computer and/or other technologies. The class will consist of hands-on experimentation and production supplemented by slide lectures, videos, visiting artists, and academic research.

This course may be substituted for the Art Major requirement of ART 113, Color, for Intermedia and Digital Art majors. All other majors require a petition to substitute this course for ART 113, Color. If you have already taken ART 113, this course may be counted as an art elective. However, keep in mind it is a 100-level elective. Please see your academic advisor for more specific information.
